Dashing to the Finish Line
Viewpoint of the upcoming season from star track runners
As the new track season comes to light, the track runners begin practicing. As the season comes closer and closer, the runners get more excited to run in the meets. The WCHS Track team starts off the season strong with many practices a week and hopes to keep up the good work. Here are some interviews from some of the runners on the team and what they are anticipating concerning track and this season.
Freshmen Fabian Garcia expects a very good season this year for his first year on the track team. Garcia hopes to do well this season for himself and his team. He hopes to run the 800 meters or run sprints for the track meets. Even with the little time Garcia has been on the team, his favorite memory is hurting his ribs in practice. Garcia has not a lot of time on the team but the track has impacted his life a lot because he has learned how hard he can push himself and how far he can condition.
Sophomore Callie Gormley’s favorite event is all the hurdle events. “My favorite memory is going to the meets and being able to be with my friends and going out to eat with the team after the meets,” said Gormley. Some advice she would give anyone that wants to join track would be to show up to practice because it does pay off and that practice shows in the meets because it shows all your hard work. Gormley’s expectations for this season are to be able to run the 100 hurdles under 17 seconds also she hopes to run the 300 hurdles under 50 seconds.
Junior Justin Lehmkuhler has been on the track team for three years. Lehmkuhler’s favorite event is the high jump. He expects a good season and he thinks that the team is really shaping into a good one and it looks promising. “My favorite memory was from last year which was going to state and finishing and meddling in both the 110 hurdles and high jump,” said Lehmkuhler. Some advice he would give people would to not be afraid to show up its a lot of fun.
Senior Amber Kling has been on the track team for two years. “My favorite event is the 100-meter sprint because it is just as much a mental race as it is a speed race because your start determines how well you will finish,” said Kling. Kling does three events which are the 100- meter, 200- meter and the 4×1 relay. Her favorite memory is the practices and the fun everyone has on the team and enjoying each other company. Kling hopefully expects to improve this season, but also just to have fun bonding with the underclassmen before she leaves this spring.
