Play Primate Sanctuary

A primate sanctuary in the heart of Kentucky

If you’re in Nicholasville, then you’re probably there to shop, eat, or watch a movie. But if you traveled further into Nicholasville you’d stumble upon a little bit of the jungle.

Founded in the 1980s, the Kentucky Primate Rescue Center has been taking in and offering safety to various primates for over 30 years. The center currently has over 50 primates in its care, including 9 chimpanzees. The center not only helps the primates but assists zoos in primate research and educates the public on illegal primate trading. Sadly, the sanctuary is not open to the public, but they do have a Member’s day, where donators and volunteers can come and see the animals. However, the sanctuary offers volunteering and internship opportunities. In order to volunteer or intern, you have to be at least 18 years old, work 3 or more hours, and be comfortable with the physical activity.

For internships, you have to commit 20-40 hours a week for 3 months and are encouraged to take courses like biology and primatology. If you love working with animals and are hoping to pursue a career in biology, zoology, or in animal research, this would be an amazing opportunity. In a small town like Versailles, and a debatable boring state, I feel like if we looked around a little harder, we’d be able to find these hidden gems that set Kentucky apart. Kentucky has more of these gems than we realize, and I can’t wait for you to keep reading these articles and discover Kentucky with me.
