The Summer of 2025 has been incredible for the movie industry; titles such as Superman, Fantastic 4, Jurassic World Rebirth, and even The Naked Gun premiered this summer- all to phenomenal success. Every one of these films was very well received, but there was one that, even now, holds the record for most-watched on Netflix. The incredibly hidden gem: K-Pop Demon Hunters. This movie was something that people initially brushed off as another kids’ movie by Sony, but ended up being so popular that it broke multiple world records only a month after its Netflix exclusive debut. Today, we will be giving an overview of the movie’s various parts and see what makes it so “golden”.
Music
The music of this movie is record-breaking— literally. The movie’s soundtrack had four tracks on the top 10 Billboard charts simultaneously. This hasn’t happened in around 30 years. Additionally, it achieved number one on the UK Official Singles Chart. Each song is performed by either the fictional Huntrix (stylized as HUNTR/X) or Saja Boys, the two main groups of the movie. The main highlights are HUNTR/X’s “Golden” and Saja Boys’ “Soda Pop”.
Story
Demons run rampant across the entire world, sent by their king, Gwi-ma. They raged across ancient Korean villages without anyone being able to keep them in check– until the Hunters, three sages chosen to fight back against the dark, rose to the challenge and created the Honmoon: A barrier meant to separate demons from humans and keep them sealed. The story is not complicated and even cliché if you’ve seen more than one Disney movie, but that’s part of its simplistic charm. It follows the three modern Hunters: Rumi (Leader), Zoey (Creative), and Mira (Headstrong). You’ll learn about their unique quirks if you watch the movie, but we will still discuss them here.
Animation
The animation of the movie is Sony’s strong point, and it keeps the same formula from their other hits, such as Spider-Verse. The movie uses the style of Sony’s characters to its benefit, making the antagonists look both evil at some points and completely innocent at other times. This creates the duality of both comedy and serious storytelling through the animation. There are so many tiny details of animation that are unnoticed by most, but they add a layer of depth and showcase how much effort was put into this movie by the animators.
Characters
Either through the mass media campaign of K-Pop Demon Hunters or through watching the movie yourself, you’ve heard of the three main characters one way or another. Each of them brings an interesting dynamic to the group. Rumi is a work-obsessed but determined leader of Huntrix. Aiming to complete their goal of sealing the demons permanently by turning the Honmoon gold through any means. On the other hand, we have Mira. She’s stubborn, hot-headed, but compassionate and understandable. She is the one who faces the reality of any situation and brings the other two back to earth if needed. Meanwhile, on the polar opposite side of the spectrum is Zoey. She is “eager to please,” but that does not define her entire character: she’s energetic, creative, and tactile. There’s more to each of them, but it’d be better to watch than read, no?
Fun Value
This movie is definitely a fun experience, no matter if you take it as seriously as The Godfather or decide to relax and watch it as a casual experience. The movie also clearly wants to have fun, despite its occasionally serious tone. Overall, the movie uses its Sony charm well and knows how to use its style for jokes. A great example of this is during the Saja Boys’ introduction, where one of them almost makes fun of Rumi for falling. This is an important and serious plot scene, yet it’s played off in a well-done and respectful way.
Conclusion
K-Pop Demon Hunters presents the best qualities of modern-day animation movies. It takes itself seriously while also keeping it kid-friendly and comedic. I heavily recommend checking it out while you get the chance. The name of it may sound silly, but if you can get past it, you will enjoy it. I also highly recommend checking out the music to hear what it sounds like after you watch the movie. This is a great movie and we heavily recommend it.
