Suspiria (1977)
For most, traveling to Europe to follow your dreams and attend a prestigious school sounds like a dream, but for Suzy (Jessica Harper) it proves to be nothing but a nightmare. From Italian director Dario Argento, Suspiria is a thrilling murder mystery starring Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, Joan Bennett and Alida Valli with beautiful cinematography by Luciano Tovoli. From the moment Suzy arrives her experience at her new dance academy has been strange. She’s run into a fleeing student shouting about a secret, the butler never speaks and there have been several murders within just a few days. It’s only when Suzy’s new friend Sara (Casini) is hysterical and ends up missing, Suzy begins to unravel the dark history of the academy. Although terrifying in its prime, Suspiria, is more likely to make you laugh than keep you up late at night. A pre-1980s soundtrack is anything but scary and the “gore” is more campy than gruesome. All in all Suspiria is a fun movie to laugh at with your friends or family, and you’ll still manage to get your eight hours in.
