It Gets Better

The It Gets Better Project is a nonprofit organization with the mission to uplift and empower LGBTQ+ youth around the globe while connecting the community and creating a sense of unity. They strive to reach millions of young people each year through media programming, educational resources, and even international affiliates in over 20 countries. One of the most important features on their site is a “Get Help” section- a streamlined database full of different resources for countless different situations or circumstances, including resources specifically for LGBTQ+ youth of color and GNC/transgender youth.

History

It Gets Better was founded in 2010 by Dan Savage and his partner, Terry Miller, in a response to the countless suicides of LGBTQ+ youth due to bullying. In an interview, Savage said he wished he could tell one teenager in particular that it gets better. These three words were the spark that launched a wildly successful social media campaign, with over 70,000 people sharing their own stories to encourage those who may be going through a similar crisis.
