GLSEN
"Creating inclusive schools for all"
About
The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, is an LGBTQ+ advocacy program that focuses primarily on the equality and safety of LGBTQ+ identifying students. GLSEN works to ensure that each student can thrive, learn, and grow in a bullying and harassment-free environment, and they believe that this can be achieved through four major components: Developing supportive educators, enforcing comprehensive policies, implementing inclusive curriculum, and supporting student GSAs (Gay-Straight Alliances or Gender-Sexuality Alliances).
History
GLSEN was founded by a group of teachers in 1990 and was originally known as GLISTN (Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teacher Network). The goal was to create an organization that would specialize in inclusivity and acceptance in K-12 education.
