Brie Gaines: Lacrosse

Brie Gaines plans on playing for Thomas More next year and will be studying business administration.

Brie Gaines is a part of the class of 2020 at Woodford County High School. Gaines has been playing Lacrosse for 5 years and decided to play because it looked fun but little did she know that it would soon turn into a passion of hers.  So how about we get to know Senior athlete Brie Gaines?

What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was being recognized for being both the best midfield player and draw specialist in the state
What was your fondest memory of playing this sport?
My favorite memory is probably going to state undefeated, and winning 14-5. I’ve never been more proud of anything in my entire life
What position do you play? What is your number? Are you a Captain?
I’m the starting draw specialist, so I play midfield about ninety percent of the time. My number is 33.  Yes, I was a captain my first year, sophomore year, and again this year.
What is your personal goal for this sport?
I want to excel and beat all of my high school career highlights when I play in college.
What foods or drinks help you gear up and stay energized for the game/event?
Body Armor is definitely my go-to drink before a game, but I always drink chocolate milk afterward.
What is the best part about competing?
The best part about competing is seeing my friends and seeing the game of lacrosse grow in Kentucky. I play club so I know almost everyone in our conference.
What is your favorite sports quote?
Before every game we chant, “Earned, not given,” and that really resonates with me.
What emotions do you feel when you play well?
When I play well I feel accomplished and proud, because I know I contributed to our success.
What is your favorite song to listen to prior to competing?
This might sound silly, but we always listen to two songs: Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey and the Climb by Miley Cyrus. My team will sing these songs together in the locker room before a game and it’s the best thing ever.
What do you do to calm your butterflies while you compete?
I don’t think there’s any cure for the butterflies, but every time I hear that first whistle they go away. When I hear that whistle, I know it’s game time and I have to do well.
How does athletics make you a better student or worker?
If being on several different teams has taught me one thing, it’s trust. Lacrosse is a game of perfection and you have to be able to trust yourself and your teammates to do well.
What advice would you give your underclassmen?
My advice is to never give up. Put in those few extra reps outside of practice, push yourself a little harder when you’re conditioning. If you’re on a team, everybody has to give it their all for everyone to be successful.
How has playing this sport affected you for your future?
Playing sports has given me the drive and ambition to seek higher education.
Where do you plan on going to school next year? What do you plan on studying?
I plan on playing for Thomas More next year. I will be studying business administration.
Who is your role model? Who do you look up to?
Sam Apuzzo is my biggest role model; I want to become the athlete she is in the next few years.
