Lane Cecil: Baseball

"Sting ‘em!" - Lane Cecil

Lane Cecil is a part of the class of 2020 at Woodford County High School. Lane Cecil has been playing baseball for 9 years and the decision to play when he was younger came from wanting to explore outside of soccer. Cecil, in search of something different, found what he wanted to play baseball and ended up falling in love with it. So how about we get to know Senior athlete Lane Cecil?

What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest baseball accomplishment is probably getting a defensive award for my travel ball team back to back years.
What was your fondest memory of playing this sport(s)?
My favorite baseball memory is getting to hang out with all my teammates this past summer at the hotels during tournaments.
What position do you play? What is your number? Are you a Captain?
I play all over the infield,  #22.  We don’t really have captains for baseball.

What is your personal goal for this sport(s)?

My personal goal for baseball is to be the best teammate anyone has ever had. That’s how I’d like the guys to remember me.

What foods or drinks help you gear up and stay energized for the game/event?
I usually snag some Subway before games.
What is the best part about competing?

The best part about competing especially in baseball is the toughness it teaches you. It can make you feel like you’re at rock bottom or on top of the world.
What is your favorite sports quote?
“If you ain’t first you’re last.”- Ricky Bobby
What emotions do you feel when you play well?
When I play well, it gives me a big self-esteem boost but also just a lot of gratitude to even have the opportunity to play.
What is your favorite song to listen to prior to competing?
My walk-up song is She’s Country by Jason Aldean, so I’d have to go with that.
What do you do to calm your butterflies while you compete?
I usually just try to breathe and remember the world won’t stop spinning if I don’t do well.
How does athletics make you a better student or worker?
Sports requires you to keep your grades up in order to be eligible, but also sports for me has been a big boost to my work ethic. I’m not the best athlete, but I take pride in earning my successes.
What advice would you give your underclassmen?
I would say just try to represent yourself, your team, and your school the best way you know-how.
How has playing this sport affected you for your future?
Baseball has taught me a lot. Our coaches say baseball is most like life itself because you’re going to fail more than you succeed, so learn to cherish those but also bounce back quickly.
Where do you plan on going to school next year? What do you plan on studying?
The University of Kentucky and Accounting.

Who is your role model? Who do you look up to?

My grandpa is a huge role model for me. He has earned everything he has.

If you were an animal what animal would you be? Why?

I would be a saber tooth tiger, because nobody wants to mess with one, or didn’t when they were alive.
